Fallen Heroes of Georgia 10K/5K/1K

March 19, 2011- My mother and I woke up at 5AM for an 8AM race and drove north of Atlanta to Lake Lanier Islands Resort in Buford, Georgia.  We ran the 5K.  This races honors the 191 soldiers from Georgia that have passed away since 2001.  Before the race began, volunteers were handing out green "Remember Fallen Soldiers" rubber bracelets and American flags. There were Army vehicles lined up and soldiers in uniforms.  Soldiers also directed traffic into the resort.  They do so much better at directing traffic! 

Before the National Anthem was played, a father that lost his son in Iraq said a few words.  He also said that people are all the time asking him what they can do for him.  The father said that what we were doing today (running this race) was exactly what we need to be doing. 

The race course is extremely hilly, way more than I expected. It was my first time at Lake Lanier and it is so beautiful.  There were several water park areas, about 15 water slides, zip-lining, and of course, boats and sailboats.  When we first entered the park, the first bridge you get to made me feel like I was driving next to a bay in Florida.  Ok, back to the race course, there were medics and soldiers everywhere.  They were cheering us on, handing us water, and completely supporting us.  The race began by running up hill, but it was a downhill finish.

Post race, there was Muscle Milk (i love this stuff) and water and maybe a few other things.  The 10K and 5K racers received mustard-colored short-sleeved tech shirts.  The 1K people received short sleeved t-shirts.  The race fee $30 for the 10K and 5K.  This race was ran perfectly and I would definitely run it again!  www.fallenheroesofgeorgia.com
